Ballad Of Davy Crockett 45 by Bill Hayes

Bill Hayes is now 87 years old. For the past 42years her has played the part, (off and on), of Doug Williams on the Soap Opera DAYS OF OUR LIVES. Back in the mid-1950s, however, he had one of the memorable hits of the decade.

Unless you were alive at the time, it’s difficult to comprehend just how popular Davy Crockett was during the mid-1950s. Fueled by the Disney series starring Fess Parker, all sorts of Davy Crockett items were sold to tens-of-millions of children.

Several versions of the “Ballad Of Davy Crockett” entered the BILLBOARD MAGAZINE Charts. Fess Parker’s version reached number five on the pop charts and Tennessee Ernie Ford reached number five pop and number four country. Even bluegrass artist Mac Weisman reached number 10 on the Country Chart.

It was Bill Hayes who had the biggest hit as he topped all three BILLBOARD Pop Charts in 1955.

Best Sellers In Stores Chart – 3/26/55 – 5 weeks at number one.
Most Played By Disc Jockeys Chart – 4/23/55 – 3 weeks at number one.
Most Played In Juke Boxes Chart – 4/23/55 – 3 weeks at number one.

He may have had only one other chart single but his one big hit was memorable as it sold over one-million copies.
