Mike Oldfield is a multi-instrumentalist who combines elements of progressive rock and classical influences into his music. His TUBULAR BELLS album was the first album released on the Virgin label during 1973. It was a 49 minute one-track album that had huge commercial success in his native England.
A short edited version of the song was used as the title song for the movie THE EXORCIST. It had an ominous and spooky feel to it, which was perfect for the movie.
The shortened version was released as a single in the United States during early 1974. It became an unexpected hit by reaching number seven on the BILLBOARD MAGAZINE Pop Singles Chart. Nearly 40 years later, it is still a spooky listen.
