Surfin’ Bird 45 by The Trashmen

The Trashmen were a surf band formed during 1962 by lead guitarist/vocalist Tony Andreason, guitarist/vocalist Dal Winslow, bassist Bob Reed, and drummer Steve Wahrer.

A year later they took elements from The Rivingtons, “The Bird’s The Word,” and “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” and created “Surfin’ Bird.” If any surf song can be classified as a novelty hit, this is the one.

Released during November of 1963, it reached number four on the BILLBOARD MAGAZINE Pop Singles Chart. They would only have one other chart hit.

While “Surfin’ Bird” may not have changed rock history, it made it a little more enjoyable for a while. “The Birds The Word.”
