Johnny Horton is best remembered for his sries of historical songs. He was a country singer and charted 13 singles on the BILLBOARD MAGAZINE Country Chart, 1956-1962. Three of the releases reached number one.

His biggest and most memorable song was “The Battle Of New Orleans.” the opening line; “In 1814 we took a little trip,” was instantly recognizable as it began the story of the famous Battle Of New Orleans during the war of 1812.

Released during early 1959, it topped the BILLBOARD Country Chart and then crossed over to the Pop Chart, which it topped for six weeks. Billboard ranked it as the number two song of the year and number 22 for the entire decade. It also won the 1960 GRAMMY Award for Best Country & Western Song.

Horton’s career was cut short when he was killed in an auto accident by a drunk driver, November 5, 1960, while returning home from a concert.
