Songwriter Paul Vance was watching his two year old daughter cavort around the beach in a yellow polka dot bikini and the light went on in his head and a song was born.
Brian Hyland was a 16 year old high school student from Brooklyn when he recorded “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.” The song came very close to not being released as it was considered risqué for the early 1960’s.
It first reached the Billboard Hot 100 on July 4, 1960, and reached number one on August 8. It remained at the top for only one week and then was replaced by one of Elvis’ big hits.
Hyland would place a total of 22 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, 1960-1971, but his first would be the only one to reach number one.
