Harper, or Peter D. Harper if you will, may be an Australian but as a harpist he was born to play the blues, Chicago style.
His new album, backed by his tight band Midwest Kind, is a combination of some funky rhythms from the 1950’s and 1960’s, a dash of soul, and modern day lyrics. It all adds up to a fusion of blues and roots music.
The foundation of his music is his virtuosity as a harpist. He is able to soar and provide subtle backing as the occasion calls for. The unusual element to his sound is the didgeridoo, which is an Australian instrument whose history reaches back a thousand years or so. It is a wooden pipe instrument that produces a droning sound that may take some getting used too but used judicially, it adds a creative aspect to his music.
If you are in the mood for something a little different and want some hot Chicago harp blowing, then this is an album for you.
